This painting totally kicked my ass. I did this one because I'd been wanting to try a Tissot, and the man had technical skills out the wazoo. It's a portrait and a figure drawing of course, but also a room in perspective, a landscape beyond the window, and there's a little still life on the table too. The perspective especially really challenged me.
I hadn't heard of Tissot before starting this project, but he was difficult to miss once I started learning more about art history. He became known for painting fashionable ladies in scenes of everyday life, and later in life got really into religious art. His most famous and beloved work is still of the fashionable women, and the way he painted clothing is extremely impressive since from what I can tell, excessive amounts of ruffles were very In at the time. He was also painting at the same time as the Impressionists and was friends with Degas, Monet, Morisot and others--he was even invited to participate in the first Impressionist exhibition, which I thought was interesting since his style is so different.
