Self Portrait

I remember feeling like this one was a breakthrough. It was the first entry to this series I'd done since finishing a semester of an oil painting portrait class through the Continuing Education program at the School of Visual Arts, and I could really feel how much I'd learned. It felt so much easier to pick colors for the skin tones and block in the structure of the head than it had before.

This painting was also such a fun find. The artist Sofonisba Anguissola was a female artist who worked during the Renaissance. She met Michelangelo, who recognized her as talented, and eventually became a royal painter to the Spanish court. I really enjoyed this confident self portrait showing herself at work. (Plus, I love when I get to draw myself as baby Jesus.)
