I don't remember how I found this partciular painting, but I definitely was a big fan of this woman's elaborate bonnet. It was interesting and even a little amusing while also being relatively simple, always a good thing when I was aiming to do 100 paintings total. She also has a nice intelligent look on her face which was fun to emulate. It could make me look like I was in on the joke.
This painting has this attention to detail to surfaces--the texture of her bonnet, the way the pin pierces and exits the fabric, the translucent portion on her forehead, the glint of rings on her fingers. At the same time, some of the larger proportions can be a little off which makes the entire painting look a little clumsy or silly. I learned by doing this project that that's a hallmark of the Northern Renaissance, and I decided that I really like it. It's charming.
This painting is now in the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
